Another bucket list Destination!
Iceland is home to some of the world’s most beautiful natural scenery, from Volcanoes, Natural Geo-Thermal springs, glaciers, geysers to the spectacular Aurora Borealis!
We flew from Manchester Airport on Boxing day (chaos!) Thousands of people trying to get across the world to see family and friends.
After a shakey 4 hour flight with some of the worst turbulence I’ve ever experienced and cross winds that nearly sent us on a non-existant run way we landed in Keflavík airport.
Straight to the car hire desk and headed on our way to the Blue Lagoon one of the 25 wonders of the world and probably Icelands most famous tourist spot.
Relaxing in the natural geothermal spa getting rid of all that airport stress , bathing in a silica face mask, getting a glass of bubbly at the lagoon side bar, dining in the Lava Restaurant and ofcourse getting that perfect selfie is a must do!
Pre booking is required so don’t just turn up!
We then headed to Lux Apartments after, a superbly rated comfortable apartment at an even comfortabler price.
The Journey there was a test in it’s self, I was by this time familiar with driving on the opposite side of the road but not on sheet ice while being pounded by Hailstones and covered in a blanket of Snow! With studded tyres and a steady right foot we survived and reached our Home for the week.
Situated 10 minutes away from down town Rejkavic we headed off to explore the next day.
you’ll find lots of nice places to eat in Rejkavic, we stumbled accross a place called Islenski Barinn.
We was told that Fin Whale was a Islandic delicasy and is a must try when in the land.
So we did…
The taste was unbelievable, well sort of a rare steak, topped with chunky bacon and a side of chip waffles.
Turns out after some research that it’s not an Icelandic delicasy and nearly all of the whales caught and sold to restaurants are consumed by tourist…not residents.
I’ll leave it up to you if you want that on your conscience.
Next we headed towards some of the famous land marks in Iceland that you’d normally do on a tour bus.. the route is called The Golden Circle. Tours can be booked from the link.
We’re not great fans of excursions so we did it our self…comfortable car and your own music playing.. lovely.
Because of the weather we couldn’t do all of the route as we had to drive extremely slow, the picture above does no justice to the severity of the weather conditions!
We first headed to Kerið a scenic lake with a gigantic Volcanic crater, it was completely frozen over when we went but I’ve seen pictures of it during ‘summer’.
Next stop: Gullfoss Falls.
The most Insane water fall I’ve ever witnessed.
There’s many spots to take some epic pictures and lots of people about to take them for you if the selfie stick just wont do!

Next: Geysir
Now on the journey back towards Reykjavik the famous geysir is a spectacular sight to see!

The Aurora Borealis
Unfortunately it’s not certain you will see this natural electrical phenomenon.
The spectacle of Aurora Borealis requires dark and partly clear skies.
There’s a few apps you can download to give you a good idea of when the best days to see it!
There’s also tours that will take you to the best spots, and if you don’t have any luck, they’ll take you the next day to try again!
We definitely want to go back to see this amazing light show as when we was there the weather wasn’t on our side, as you’ve seen!
